To understand the various effects, this article discusses in detail the scientific studies of this plant. 1. Introduction {#sec1} =============== Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, commonly called Ashwagandha, is an evergreen perennial plant of the Solanaceae family. It is widely distributed throughout tropical, sub-tropical and temperate regions of the world including Asia, Africa and Australia [@bib1], [@bib2]. It is well known for its many medicinal properties used for the treatment of a variety of disorders. Due to its high medicinal values, it has been reported in different medicinal studies that the dried fruits, roots and leaves of Ashwagandha are used in traditional medicines for the treatment of a wide range of ailments including sexual impotence [@bib3], fever, asthma, diabetes, rheumatism, epilepsy, anemia, inflammation and cancer [@bib4], [@bib5]. Several clinical studies have shown that Ashwagandha possesses the ability to treat sexual dysfunction in men. It improves erectile function by increasing the nitric oxide level and thus stimulating the production of blood flow [@bib6], [@bib7], [@bib8]. The plant is a rich source of steroidal lactones, alkaloids, saponins and flavonoids that are known to exhibit various important biological properties such as free radical scavenging, neuroprotection, antifungal, antibacterial and cytotoxicity [@bib9], [@bib10]. Ashwagandha has traditionally been used for the treatment of sexual impotence, and currently, the leaves of this plant are widely used as a natural product in Ayurvedic medicine [@bib11]. However, the plant has been reported to possess harmful effects such as hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, carcinogenicity and genotoxicity [@bib12], [@bib13], [@bib14], [@bib15].
